Eric Wanaina, The Whiff of Scandal   by Chege Miati

Eric Wainaina is a Kenyan afro-fusion artiste with a large fan base because of his tunes whose focal point is political charged subject matter e.g. fraud, political science, anarchy and serenity. Eric is the proud owner of 3 world renowned studio records: Sawa Sawa (2001), Twende Twende (2006) and Love and Protest (2011). Therefore when a scandalous story broke out about Eric, followers and enemies were stunned the same. News was and is still circulating that Eric was involved in adultery with a singer and had impregnated her. The female I’m speaking of is Valerie, a former contestant of Tusker Project Fame a Kenyan artistry pursuance funded by East African Breweries Ltd.

This presented an opportunity for a lot of rumors since Eric is married to Sheba and has three children with her. All this drama happened in the year 2010 and still continues to feature in Kenyans daily conversations in the year 2012. Tabloid reports for that year especially the “Weekend Star” claim that Eric went to court to try and force Valerie Kimani to conduct a DNA test on the baby. Wainaina also accused Valerie of trying to obtain mileage for her career by associating with him with the child. Valerie however refused to take the child, Zion, for the DNA test. In the court papers, Eric insisted that her refusal to allow the paternity test had adversely affected his personal life and put a psychological strain on his family. The case is yet to be allocated a hearing date as of this year. A meeting to resolve the problem was convened in August 2010 to discuss the issue of upkeep and parental responsibility and in attendance were Wainaina, his wife Sheba, Valerie, her parents and a pastor from Valerie’s church but they failed to resolve the matter. So I guess in the new year 2012 this will continue to be fodder for gossip among Kenyan folks.

Away from the scandal Eric had a great year in 2011. In December he had staged an official release of the album, Love and Protest for an affordable fee of only 399 Kenya Shillings. The itinerary for the album launch involved a series of performances at select Nakumatt stores in Nairobi and its outskirts and was also present at the Mindspeak Conference at Hotel Intercontinental on December 3. With Love and Protest, Eric has featured tracks that are familiar to fans via his numerous performances. Some of the songs include Fancy Car and Orutu Special. The title of the album is exactly who Eric as an artiste has been. According to his profile details on his website the Twende Twende star is described as one who has composed hit singles that are “powerful indictments of the authoritarian and ethnically divisive governments that have governed Kenya since independence”.

Since the rumour mill is always has its sights targeted at Eric there is a story going round that the musician is currently recording a rendition of the popular Malaika song by the late Kenyan benga maestro Fadhili Williams. Like many I’m curious what his Malaika lyrics will be, close to the genius of Fadhili or even better? We can only wait and see.
